Rhythmbox 0.11.0 "Rough in the Diamond"
Monday 28th May 2007

On behalf of the Rhythmbox developers, I'm happy to announce the first release of the new 0.11.0 development series. Rhythmbox 0.11.0 "Rough in the diamond" has several new features, both user-visible and in the back end.

Rhythmbox now has a gapless-playback / crossfading playback backend, although it is not currently enabled by default, due to some known issues (particularly with visualisation). Thanks to Andreas Nilsson and Hylke Bons we have some shiny new Tango-style icons, which make Rhythmbox look better.

We have also fixed a number of issues which were causing the application to wake up the CPU while idle, allow plugins to add GStreamer filters/tee'd elements and write modified playlists back to iPods.

Summary of changes:

Dependency changes

For this development series, we have dropped support for old versions of a few libraries. If you need to build Rhythmbox against any of these, you will need to use the 0.10 stable series, or update the libraries. The library versions no longer supported are:

Overview of Changes in Rhythmbox 0.9.0

The changes are too numerous to list here, but the main focuses have been on stability and memory usage. So your Rhythmbox should be even more stable, and less resource hungry.

Rhythmbox has moved its development tree back to GNOME's CVS servers, which means it's easier to get a hold of it for people who want to live on the cutting-edge. It also means that development has picked up again (the last release was nearly 10 months ago), and that new features will be coming thick and fast!

If I had to summarize the development since 0.6, I would say it's just like Rhythmbox, only better :) From stuff like Ogg support for internet radio, ReplayGain support, and automatic playlists based on rating, what we've done is just generally try to flesh everything out. We are also showcasing GStreamer's cool features like metadata reading.

However, we are set for some major changes in 0.9 (working to 1.0). File monitoring is already done, we have work going on for a SQLite backend, there's code to implement an Icecast source, and with software like HAL, the (still experimental) iPod support should start shaping up. And with luck we'll get metadata writing via GStreamer done :)

Here are the changes since 0.7.2:

Here's a new version in the Rhythmbox development series. We're rapidly approaching 0.8.0. A lot of bugs have been fixed.

I'd like to take this space to explain what's going on with tag editing. The situation is that almost all the work that needs to be done for this inside Rhythmbox is already done. What needs to be done now is for the underlying media library like GStreamer or Xine to support it. GStreamer's actually getting pretty close, and you may even see it in the GStreamer 0.8.0 series.
